Fire Alarm Servicing & Maintenance Contracts
A fire alarm only protects your people if it works when it's needed. Regular servicing keeps your system reliable, keeps you in line with BS 5839-1 and gives you the records you need to show you're meeting your fire safety responsibilities.
Crystal Smart & Security services fire alarm systems for offices, shops, hospitality venues and landlords. We're FIA members with FireQual-qualified engineers, based in Cardiff and working with businesses nationwide.
How often should a fire alarm be serviced?
The 2025 edition of BS 5839-1 recommends that fire alarm systems are serviced at intervals of
about six months
. In practice, visits between five and seven months apart are accepted, which gives you a little flexibility around busy periods.
Your fire risk assessment or insurer may ask for more frequent visits, so it's worth checking. Between services, you or a nominated person should still test the alarm weekly from a different manual call point each time, and record it in your logbook.
What a service visit includes
Each visit is carried out to BS 5839-1 by a FireQual-qualified engineer and typically covers:
- Inspection and testing of the control panel, power supplies and batteries
- Testing of detectors, manual call points and sounders, working through the system across the year
- On wired systems, checks on detectors, zones, cabling and fault monitoring, standby batteries and sounders
- On wireless systems, checks on devices, signal strength and battery levels
- A review of your logbook and any faults or false alarms since the last visit
- Notes on any changes to your building that could affect fire detection
- A service record and certificate for your files
If anything needs attention, we'll explain it clearly and agree any work with you before we go ahead.
Maintenance contracts that fit your business
Our fire alarm maintenance contracts take the admin off your plate. We keep track of when your next service is due and book it in, so you don't have to remember.
- 3, 6 or 12-month options to suit your premises, risk assessment and budget
- Call-outs when you need an engineer for a fault or problem between visits
- Clear records, kept up to date, ready for inspections or your insurer
- One point of contact who knows your system
Not sure which option is right? We'll recommend one after looking at your system and premises.
We service systems we didn't install
You don't need to have bought your fire alarm from us. We can take over the servicing of existing systems, whether wired conventional, wired addressable or wireless EN 54. On the first visit we'll check the system thoroughly and let you know if anything isn't up to standard.
If your system is reaching the end of its life, we can talk you through a replacement. See our commercial fire alarm installation page.
Servicing wired conventional and addressable systems
Many commercial buildings run on wired fire alarms, and we service and maintain both conventional (zoned) and addressable systems. That includes panels from Kentec, C-TEC and Advanced, as well as other common makes.
On a wired system, our FireQual-qualified engineers test detectors and call points zone by zone or device by device, check the panel's fault monitoring, standby batteries and power supplies, and confirm sounders work throughout the building. If you're taking over a site or switching provider, we'll start with a thorough first visit and give you a clear picture of the system's condition, so you know where you stand before your contract begins.
Fire and security under one contract
We also maintain CCTV, intruder alarms and access control. Bringing fire and security together means fewer visits and fewer suppliers to manage. Find out more about our commercial CCTV and security systems .
